Ukraine is one of the world’s largest grain exporters and the world`s largest producer of
sunflower seeds.

The country with strategic geographical location and is home to a multi-ethnic population.

There are two major types of employment contracts in Ukraine:

  • Labour agreement for an indefinite term. This type of agreement is mostly used in Ukraine. Provides the best options and guarantees for an
  • Fixed-term agreement. The only difference between this type of contract and the first one is that the Parties limit their collaboration to a specific period, based on the type of activity performed. If work relationships continue after the end date, will be treated as an agreement concluded on an indefinite term.
  • Civil agreement can be used to engage professionals for the project work. The main attributes are that Professionals do not follow any internal company rules and working schedule and are paid based on the result of the work done, not as salaried ones.

Full-time work cannot exceed 40 hours per week.
All employees are entitled to paid annual leave of 24 calendar days per year without taking into account the non-working holidays.

Depending on a social status additional vacation days can be provided.

Ukrainian law provides maternity leave for pregnant employees/employees who have given birth of 126 calendar days (or 140 calendar days for multiple births or in case of a complicated confinement). Maternity leave is fully paid (100% of an employee’s average salary capped by a maximum base salary for Social Single Fee) from the Social Security Fund of Ukraine.

Leave to take care of a child up to 3 years old can be provided either by the mother or any other relative who takes care of a child.

The place of work is saved for this period.

  • No obligatory fringe benefits in Ukraine, unless for specific types of jobs such as working in fields, on shifts, etc.
  • From general market practice, Employers provide medical insurance to their employees.

  • July 15 (Wednesday) — Ukrainian Statehood Day
  • August 24 (Monday) — Independence Day of Ukraine
  • October 1 (Thursday) — Defender of Ukraine Day
  • December 25 (Friday) — Christmas Day

All foreign nationals must obtain a work permit before commencing work.

The permit is issued by the State Employment Center and is valid for the term clarified in such permit (usually it is 1 year and may be extended).

The employer must apply for a work permit with supporting personal data and a copy of the labour agreement.

The application should state that according to the law, it is not related to belonging to the citizenship of Ukraine and does not require access to state secrets.

The average term to receive permission is 1 month.

On obtaining Visa D, the foreign national is allowed to enter Ukraine and apply for a permit for continuous habitation (continuous residence permit).

The continuous residence permit is valid for the term of work permit validity.

Please note:

 Work permit does not entitle a foreigner to reside in Ukraine.

In the same time obtaining of work permit is one of the basics to obtain a temporary residence permit in Ukraine.

The involvement of highly qualified foreign specialists and workers is required for the experience exchange and countries` economic progress.

  1. Termination due to employee’s will. The employee may terminate the employment contract by giving the employer notice in writing. The employee should notify Employer not later than 14 calendar days before termination
  1. By mutual agreement. This type of termination is used for situations when some misunderstandings between parties arise.
  1. Redundancy. The employer must send a written notification to the Employer no later than 60 days prior to the dismissal date. Specific procedures and severance payment are defined for this type of termination.
