Employment contracts in Romania

As a standard practice, employment contracts in Romania are typically of an unlimited (open-ended) nature. However, there’s also the option for an individual employment contract to have a limited duration. Regardless of the type, all individual employment contracts must be in writing, in Romanian, and agreed upon by both the employer and the employee.

Limited-duration contracts, known as fixed-term contracts, are permissible only under specific conditions outlined in the Labour Code. These contracts necessitate essential information and a specified duration. According to the regulations, an employee in the same position can only receive three successive fixed-term contracts, with a total duration not exceeding 36 months.
